The Mediterranean Gull, Ichthyaetus melanocephalus, is a small gull which breeds nearly entirely in Europe, mainly in the south east, especially around the Black Sea, and in central Turkey. There are colonies somewhere else in southern Europe, and this species has undergone a dramatic array expansion in contemporary decades. Birders often abbreviate its name to “Med Gull”. As is the case with many gulls, it has traditionally been placed in the genus Larus. Larus_melanocephalus.mp3 (139 downloads)
The Greater Small-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla) or sometimes just Small-toed Lark (but see below) is a small passerine bird. It breeds in southern Europe, northwest Africa, and across temperate Asia from Turkey and southern Russia to Mongolia. It is sometimes considered conspecific with Calandrella cinerea. During migration they form large flocks that glide in synchrony and at other times they form loose flocks.
