The simple brown back and dusky throat of the Northern Rough-winged Swallow does not stand out, causing it to go unnoticed in flocks of lighter swallow species at times. This well-known summer visitor flies low in midair and rests on cables, poles, and exposed branches over water snatching insects.
Small diurnal woodland owl in the mountainous western US and inland Mexico. Scarce and sometimes impossible to locate, but it perches conspicuously irregularly. Cocks will also tail up or sideways. When looking down, look for large black eye-spots on your nape. It primarily feeds on small birds and rodents. Slightly different variations of a set of single or paired toes are provided by different populations.
Elegant, long-necked ducks with a sleek appearance are the Northern Pintails. The tail is long and pointed, but for breeding males, it is much longer and more pronounced than for females and nonbreeding males. The wings are broad and narrow in flight.
